Penedès Wine Tours from Sitges | Private and Sommelier-Led
FROM SITGES OR BARCELONA.
Sitges sits at the edge of one of Spain’s most important wine landscapes. Drive 20 minutes inland, and you’re in the Penedès, the birthplace of cava and home to some of Catalonia’s most interesting boutique wineries. Drive two hours further west and you reach Priorat, a region so small and so serious that it holds one of only two DOQ (Denominació d’Origen Qualificada) designations in all of Spain — shared only with Rioja.
We run private, sommelier-led wine tours into both. Every tour starts with a pick-up from your hotel in Sitges, puts you in a small, private group with a trained wine expert, takes you to boutique family wineries that don’t feature on bus-tour itineraries, and gets you back to Sitges with a proper lunch inside you and a clearer understanding of why Catalan wine is worth paying attention to.
Below you’ll find all five of our wine and food experiences, with full details on what’s included, who each tour suits, and how to book.
FROM SITGES.
The Penedès wine region: what makes it worth a day?
Penedès is a Denominació d’Origen (DO) wine region covering roughly 27,000 hectares of vineyards in the hills behind the Barcelona coast. It sits at altitudes between 200 and 800 metres above sea level, with a Mediterranean climate that gives long dry summers, mild winters, and significant temperature variation between day and night — the kind of conditions that produce wines with both ripe fruit and good acidity.
The region is responsible for around 95% of all cava produced in Spain. Cava is made by the traditional method (*mètode tradicional*) — the same process used for Champagne — with a second fermentation happening inside the bottle. The three traditional grape varieties are:
- Xarel·lo — the backbone of most cavas. Mineral, textured, capable of ageing well. Also excellent as a still white wine.
- Macabeu — aromatic and fresh, lighter-bodied, adds lift to the blend.
- Parellada — floral and delicate, typically grown at higher altitude to preserve acidity.

Beyond cava, Penedès produces an increasing number of standout still wines. Single-varietal Xarel·lo has become the region’s prestige white — aged in barrel or amphora, mineral-driven, and increasingly respected at an international level. Reds are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and the indigenous Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo under its Catalan name). A growing number of estates work organically or biodynamically.
Sitges is one of the few places on the Mediterranean coast where you can be at a serious winery within 30 minutes of checking out of your hotel. That proximity matters. It means a wine tour here isn’t a full-day transfer commitment — it fits naturally into a beach holiday, a long weekend, or a corporate trip without dominating the schedule.
We work with boutique, family-run estates where production is measured in thousands of bottles rather than millions, where the owner or winemaker often leads the tasting personally, and where the wines you’re drinking aren’t available in supermarkets. Recaredo, Romagosa Torné, Caves Rovellats, Parès Baltà — these are the kind of names on our itineraries. Small enough to care who’s in the room. Good enough to be taken seriously by the trade.
Every tour is 100% private. Your group, your guide, your pace. We don’t aggregate guests into shared departures.
Wine tours on two wheels: Cycling for Vino
If a seated tour feels too passive, our Cycling for Vino day tour does the same thing on bikes. You cycle roughly 20 km through the Penedès vineyards on mostly flat country roads, stop at Caves Romagosa Torné for a proper cellar visit and tasting, and ride back through the vines. The pace is slow, the roads are quiet, and the wine is the same quality you’d taste on the private tours. Kids under 5 ride free. From €69 per person. Free hotel pick-up from Sitges included.
It’s a half-day, which means you’re back in Sitges by mid-afternoon. Good for guests who want to earn the wine rather than just sit in a car.
Wine tours for groups, corporate, and hen & stag parties.
Our private wine tours work well for groups with a range of wine knowledge. Corporate groups use the Essence of Penedès and the Priorat tour as incentive days and client entertainment. Hen and stag groups book the Cava & Brunch as a morning anchor before a Sitges afternoon. See our corporate team-building page and hen and stag tours page for tailored group options and pricing.

This is our flagship Penedès wine tour. You’re picked up at 10 am from your Sitges hotel and driven into the countryside by a trained sommelier who knows both the land and the people making the wine. The day takes in two boutique family wineries — typically one focused on cava, one on still wines — with walks through the vineyards, guided cellar visits, and tastings across up to eight premium wines and cavas.
The middle of the day belongs to lunch: a proper three-course Catalan meal prepared with seasonal, local ingredients and paired with wines from the region. Not a packed lunch at a picnic table — a real sit-down, the kind where you lose an hour and don’t mind.
The tour is 100% private. You won’t share it with other guests. The itinerary can be adjusted around dietary requirements, a preference for natural wines, or a particular interest in the production process. This is the tour to book if wine is the main reason you came to Catalonia.
ASKED QUESTIONS.
-
What is the Penedès wine region?
- Penedès is a Denominació d’Origen (DO) wine region in Catalonia, 30–40 km inland from Sitges. It produces most of Spain’s cava using the traditional method, and is increasingly known for quality still wines made from indigenous varieties: Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada. The region has over 2,500 years of winemaking history.
-
What is the difference between Penedès and Priorat wines?
- Penedès is primarily cava and white wines — lighter, fresher, mineral-driven. Priorat (DOQ Priorat) is one of Spain’s two highest-classified wine regions, known for intense, concentrated reds from old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena grown in black slate soils. Penedès is 30 minutes from Sitges; Priorat is two hours west.
-
How far is the Penedès wine region from Sitges?
- Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the cava capital of the Penedès, is about 35 minutes by car from Sitges. Vilafranca del Penedès is 30 minutes. Our private tours pick you up from your hotel — no driving, no transfer stress.
-
What is included in the private wine tours?
- All private tours include: free hotel pick-up and drop-off in Sitges, private transport throughout the day, an English-speaking sommelier guide, winery visits with guided cellar tours, wine and cava tastings, and — on full-day tours — a 3-course Catalan lunch with paired wines.
-
Do I need wine knowledge to enjoy the tour?
- No. Our sommeliers explain everything clearly and without jargon. Many guests start with a basic curiosity about wine and leave with a real understanding of Catalan viticulture. Non-drinkers in the group are welcome — guides adapt.
-
Can I do a wine tour from Barcelona instead of Sitges?
- Yes. Pick-up from central Barcelona hotels is available on private bookings. Message us to confirm your address and we’ll include it in the quote.
-
What grape varieties do Penedès wines use?
- Cava and white wines use Xarel·lo (mineral, textured, ages well), Macabeu (aromatic, fresh), and Parellada (floral, delicate, grown at altitude). Reds use Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and the indigenous Ull de Llebre (the Catalan name for Tempranillo).
For guests who want a proper cava experience without committing a full day, the Cava & Brunch is the one to do. We take you to a beautiful modernist winery in the heart of the Penedès — Caves Rovellats, set inside an architecture-listed estate surrounded by vineyards — for a guided cellar tour followed by six cava tastings paired with a tapas brunch.
The guided cellar tour covers the traditional method of cava production from vine to bottle, including a walk through underground galleries where bottles age horizontally for a minimum of nine months (up to years, for Gran Reserva styles). The brunch that follows pairs each cava — Brut Nature, Reserva, Rosé, Gran Reserva — with dishes designed to show how food changes what’s in the glass.
Good for: couples on a long weekend, small groups who want to be back in Sitges for the afternoon, anyone who wants to understand cava beyond the “Spanish Champagne” shorthand.
FROM SITGES.
Priorat is two hours west of Sitges, into the interior of Catalonia. It is remote, dramatic, and produces wines unlike anything else in Spain. The vineyards grow in llicorella — a black slate and mica schist soil that forces vine roots 15 metres deep in search of water, concentrating flavour and adding a mineral quality to the wine that you can taste and smell. The region holds a DOQ (Denominació d’Origen Qualificada), the highest classification in Spanish wine law, shared only with Rioja.
The Art of Wine in Priorat takes you to three wineries: typically a pioneering family estate that was part of the 1990s revival that put the region on the world map, a boutique producer working with old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, and a century-old cellar where the winemaking approach hasn’t changed much in decades. Your sommelier guides you through the tasting and the story of how Priorat went from forgotten to world-class in a generation.
Lunch is three courses, served at one of the wineries or at a local restaurant, paired with the region’s wines. Return to Sitges by 6.30pm.
