Spain’s Penedes region has been a wine-growing powerhouse for many years. All tours are led by English-speaking guides who share their passion for the local wines and cavas, their knowledge of the region is extensive. Your tour includes transportation, visits to two different wineries, wine and cava tastings, and Spanish tapas paired with your drinks.

The route will begin by us picking you up at your hotel or accommodation, then we will drive for 25 minutes to the town of Vilafranca del Penedés where we will reach our first stop.

In Caves Rovellats you will be introduced to the fascinating world of Cava. You will love this family winery in the heart of the Penedès. At a depth of 12 meters, our radial cellar is unique in the world for its six-pointed star structure with a central roundabout. Rovellats cavas are made with their own grapes and following the traditional method.

Your second visit will be at Caves Romagosa Torné where you will meet Montse, the ninth generation making wine and cavas in the same Masia. The landscape, the climate, the wind, and the soil all play a part in creating their unique wines.

At the end of your day, we will be taking you back to Sitges, so you enjoy the rest of the day.

The Penedés Region

Penedès is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. It is believed that the name Penedès comes from Greek origins, but it was also named as such by the Romans, meaning a place full of stones (penya-des). There are a number of small towns where wines and cavas are produced.

The wine area as such extends over 3 different counties, namely Penedès and Garraf (Vilafranca del Penedès) to the south, and Anoia to the north. The main wine-producing areas have traditionally been the Alt Penedes region around Vilafranca and Sant Sadurni d’Anoia and the Baix Penedes area to the south around Sitges and El Vendrell.

Penedes is a wine region of striking contrasts. The region sits on the outskirts of Barcelona, stretched between the mountains and the coast. To the north, you’ll find wheat fields, cow pastures, and olive trees; to the south, vineyards punctuate rolling hillsides and red clay soil.

Building on a strong tradition of growing grapes in this place—the first wines were made here by the Phoenicians in 575 BC— most winemakers in Penedes use traditional, local varieties like Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada.
