Barcelona has a lot going for it. But if you’re spending a few days there and you want a proper day in wine country — not a coach to Torres and a gift shop — the move is to head south. Sitges is 35 minutes by train from Sants train station; it sits right at the edge of the Penedès wine region, and it’s where we’re based. From here, the vineyards start almost where the town ends.
This is a practical guide to doing a wine tour from Barcelona the way we think it should be done: small, private, sommelier-led, with boutique family wineries, a proper Catalan lunch, and enough time to get back to the city in the evening if you want to.
Why use Sitges as your base rather than Barcelona
The Penedès wine region sits roughly between Barcelona and Sitges, and geographically Sitges is the closer starting point for most of the boutique estates worth visiting. From central Barcelona, you’re looking at 45–60 minutes of driving before you reach the first serious winery. From Sitges, you’re there in 20–30 minutes, which means more time tasting and less time watching the AP-7.
The other reason is what comes after. Finishing a wine tour in Sitges means you can walk to the beach, eat dinner in the old town, or — if you’re not staying the night — jump the R2 Sud back to Barcelona on a pleasant post-lunch train. We pick you up from Sitges station at the start of the tour and get you back there at the end, so there’s no car rental, no navigating, and no one has to stay sober to drive.

What the Penedès actually produces
Penedès is a Denominació d’Origen (DO) wine region in Catalonia, covering roughly 27,000 hectares of vineyards in the hills behind the Barcelona coast, at altitudes between 200 and 800 metres. It is responsible for around 95% of all cava produced in Spain.
Cava is made by the traditional method — the same process as Champagne, with a second fermentation inside the bottle. The three classic grape varieties are Xarel·lo (mineral, textured, the backbone of most blends), Macabeu (aromatic, fresh, adds lift), and Parellada (floral, delicate, grown at altitude to preserve acidity). Beyond cava, Penedès produces increasingly respected still wines, particularly single-varietal Xarel·lo — aged in barrel or amphora — which has become the region’s prestige white. A growing number of estates work organically or biodynamically.
The big commercial producers — Torres, Codorníu, Freixenet — are all in Penedès, and all offer visitor experiences. But they’re built for scale. Our private wine tours from Sitges go to smaller family estates where production runs to thousands of bottles rather than millions, and where the winemaker often leads the tasting personally.

The Essence of Penedès is the full day — two boutique family wineries, vineyard walks, up to eight wine and cava tastings, and a three-course Catalan lunch with paired wines. 9am pick-up from your Sitges hotel, back by 5pm. From €890 per group (up to two guests), €1,290 for three to five, €1,590 for six to eight. 100% private, no shared groups.
Cava & Brunch is the half-day version — one modernist winery, a guided cellar tour, six cava tastings, and a Mediterranean tapas brunch. 10am start, back by 2pm. From €420 per group. Good if you want a serious cava experience without losing the whole day to it.
The Art of Wine in Priorat goes further west into Catalonia’s other great wine region — the DOQ Priorat, known for intense old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena reds grown in black slate soils called llicorella. Three wineries, a three-course lunch, expert sommelier throughout. From €185 per person. A longer day — 9.30am to 6.30pm — but worth it if serious red wine is the reason you came.
If you’d rather earn the wine, our Cycling for Vino day tour covers roughly 20 km through the Penedès vineyards on mostly flat country roads, with a proper cellar visit and tasting at Caves Romagosa Torné. Getting from Barcelona to Sitges for a wine tour
Train from Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia to Sitges: 35 minutes on the Rodalies R2 Sud line, every 30 minutes, €4–5 each way. No advance booking needed.
We pick up from Sitges station at the agreed time and drop back there at the end of the tour. If you’d rather be collected from your Barcelona hotel, mention it when you book, and we’ll include it in the quote. Tours run year-round. Harvest season (September and October) is the most atmospheric time in the vineyards, but spring and early summer are quieter and arguably more pleasant.

How far is the Penedès wine region from Barcelona?
The nearest Penedès wineries are about 40–50 minutes from central Barcelona by car, or 35 minutes to Sitges by train followed by a short drive. Sant Sadurní d’Anoia — the cava capital — is 45 minutes from Barcelona by car. Using Sitges as your base cuts that transfer time significantly and adds a much better end to the day.
What is included in a private wine tour from Sitges?

Can I book a wine tour from Barcelona as a day trip?
Yes. Take the R2 Sud train from Sants or Passeig de Gràcia to Sitges (35 minutes), and we’ll pick you up from Sitges station. For the Cava & Brunch half-day tour, you’re back in Sitges by 2pm — plenty of time to catch the train back to Barcelona for dinner. For the full-day Essence of Penedès, you’re back by 5pm. What is the difference between cava and Champagne?
Both are made by the traditional method — secondary fermentation inside the bottle — which is why they share a similar texture and bead. The differences are in the grape varieties and the climate. Champagne uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Penedès cava uses the indigenous Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada, which produce a drier, more mineral style at a fraction of the price. Gran Reserva cavas (aged 30+ months on the lees) are genuinely comparable to non-vintage Champagne in quality — and our tours include these rather than the entry-level stuff.
